About The Lego City Construction Site

If you live in a large town or city you're probably accustomed to seeing busy construction sites featuring all kinds of impressive trucks, diggers and cranes constructing huge modern multi-storey buildings, the Lego City set 7633 launched early 2009 captures such a scene.

The stand out model in this 898 piece set has to be the large bright yellow mobile crane, it features a telescopic boom and working winch which can be used to lift the included accessories. The boom can also be rotated, and just like a real crane, it comes with support beams to ensure it won’t tip over even when lifting heavy loads.

The crane will certainly come in handy to construct the included modular three storey building, which can be assembled stage by stage. To ensure each section of the building is placed correctly there’s an elevator which can raise and lower construction workers. When the building is assembled you can complete the look by adding a ‘shop’ sign and putting mini flowers into it’s flower boxes!

Besides the crane there are two other vehicles in this set, a green low loader style truck and a small yellow digger with tracked wheels. The truck is a decent sized model and can be used to transport parts of the building such as the roof, or the small digger. Of course no construction site is complete without workers and this one comes with five minifigures.

At around £60 the Construction site may be one of the more expensive sets from the City range but the models included are of a high standard and will provide plenty of play value. It’s recommended for ages 6 years and upwards.

About The Lego City Farm

The Lego City range has always been popular for it’s assortment of diverse models including everything from construction sites to airports, but there’s one area where the City range has been lacking, and that’s farms and farm vehicles. Thankfully the 2009 release of new farming themed City sets looks set to change that!

The Lego City Farm set 7637 has to be one of the must have sets from the new range, it includes a cow shed, grain silo, barn, tractor & trailer, ride on mower, animals, farm workers and lots of little extras. The tractor is a nicely detailed model and will provide plenty of play value. It features a front bucket which is perfect for scooping up small Lego bricks, and It’s trailer is a decent size and includes an opening rear and tipping mechanism.

Standing 27cm tall the grain silo tower certainly stands out in this set, and it’s not just included for decoration. The top of the silo can be removed so that small bricks can be added. Once the tower has been filled the trailer can be reversed underneath it and the bricks can be poured into the trailer. The barn building is 15cm tall and 12cm wide, for added interest it features a working winch that can be used to raise roof panels or hay bales. The barn’s roof can opened to allow easy access to the interior loft which is perfect for storing the hay bales, a large ladder provides access to the loft for the farm workers.

The animals provided with the set include two black and white cows, cat, dog and a mouse! The minifigures include a farmer and two farm workers - one male and one female.

With a total of 609 pieces and plenty of engaging features the Lego City Farm will be especially popular with younger Lego fans and is recommended for ages 5 and upwards.

About The Lego City Cargo Train

The Lego City Cargo Train Deluxe is a nice alternative to the Lego City Passenger Train, it does cost around £30 more than the Passenger Train Set but you do get more accessories and track for your money.

The set comprises of a green electric cargo locomotive with two cabs, working headlights and horn. It pulls four wagons, which when all attached together (via magnetic couplings) measures 92cm long. The four wagons are all different, there's a box wagon with large opening doors, flatbed wagon, hopper style wagon and probably the most impressive, a crane wagon which can be used to load and unload cargo. The train has six different speeds and is operated via an infrared remote controller so there are no trailing wires, and you can move around with the controller.

Besides the main train and wagons you also get three vehicles - a flat bed truck complete with cargo, a fork lift truck to load and unload the wagons, and a small red sports car that can be loaded onto the flatbed wagon using the crane. The set also comes with five minifigures - four general rail workers (with different outfits) and most importantly, a train driver.

The completed track layout measures 145cm by 84cm and is made up of twenty curved pieces, eight straight pieces and two swithching pieces (points). There is the opportunity to produce other layouts than the default loop but unless extra track packs are purchased you are slightly limited.

As a stand alone set there's enough included to provide plenty of enjoyment, though it will really come into it's own when combined with other Lego City models.

The Cargo Train Deluxe requires 9 AA batteries (not included) and is recommended for ages 6 and upwards.

Kings Castle Siege contains over 970 pieces and has lots of fantastic moving parts and features including a working drawbridge, a portcullis that can be raised and lowered and catapults that really fire! The set comes with a good assortment of mini figures, including four knights, four skeletons and of course the King himself. The dragon that comes with the castle is a nice addition, it’s 33cm long and has a wingspan of 33cm!

King’s Castle Siege is recommended for children 7 - 12 years old, younger children may need a little assistance when building the castle the first time - the completed castle is 31cm tall and 38cm wide.

Cops and robbers - a game played by children for decades is taken to the next level and brought into the Lego world with the Lego City Police Station. This 953 piece set will bring countless hours of fun to your child, while helping them to expand their growing imaginations.

The set is jam packed with all the pieces needed to simulate a real police station and even a police chase. Included in the set are of course the police headquarters building, a police car, police motorcycle and even a prison transport vehicle. With all the vehicles included, there's also Lego people to use in the vehicles including 5 policemen, a police dog and even 2 prisoners!

As for detail, the Lego Police Station cannot be rivaled - there's a satellite dish on the roof, a prison yard lookout tower and even an entrance gate that opens and closes. For a little aesthetics, the Lego City Police Station even comes with shrubs surrounding the building and the police officers come complete with mini walkie-talkies, there's even a helmet for the officer riding the police bike. The detail on the inside of the police station should also be mentioned here, it comes complete with working doors, toilets, beds and even handcuffs. Would a police station be complete without an interrogation room and of course a water cooler? Certainly not, and Lego has gone to great lengths to make sure that even these small details are included.

While this set may not be the least expensive toy that you can purchase, it is one of the most complete sets of Lego ever sold. Everything comes in one box, with no need to add any further accessories to provide your child with hour upon hour of fun.

The Lego police station is recommended for children aged between five and twelve years old.

About The Lego City Passenger Train

The main model in this set is the train itself - it’s a high speed passenger train that is very similar in looks to the German ICE high speed train. It’s made up of a power driving unit (the engine) a carriage and a second dummy drive unit (looks like a train but isn’t powered). All three are connected to each other via magnetic couplings which ensures they don’t come apart when moving, but can be pulled apart by little fingers relatively easy when required.

The train is powered by AA batteries and can be driven forward and backwards at three different speeds using an rc controller, which means no wires to trip over or break! The train also has working lights and horn, and the top of the carriage opens so that lego mini figures can be added or taken out.

The track comprises of sixteen curved rails and four straight rails which when connected together make a loop measuring 71cm x 95cm. Although this is enough track to begin with, we recommend investing in a couple of extra packs of straight rails and points which will allow for bigger and more complex layouts.

The set also includes a small platform with two seats, lamppost, dustbin, vending machine, along with three minifigures - one engineer and two passengers. But the real fun from this set will come when combined with existing City sets and mini figures to create a mini town.

The Lego City Passenger Train is recommended for children 6-12 years old, though younger children may need some help with the construction.

About the Lego City Fire Station

The lego fire station may be one of the more expensive sets from the City range, but when you consider that it contains over six hundred pieces you begin to realise that it actually offers good value for money. Not only is it the type of set that could become the centre piece of a collection, it’s also a great first set to give a child who might not have any other Lego.

The fire station headquarters building is the main model in the set, and it comprises two garages with working doors, and a bigger building that contains the kind of features you’d expect to find in a real fire station, such as a control room with computers and even an area where the firemen can get some much needed sleep! There are lots of other nice details such as a mini coffee maker, cleaning equipment and even flowers by the side of one of the garages.

Of course no fire station is complete without firemen and vehicles, and this set contains four fireman mini figures, a large fire engine and a smaller fire car. The large fire engine will provide lots of fun, it has a moving boom that can be rotated and extended to an impressive 15 inches high. One fireman can sit at the controls of the boom and another can stand right at the top and hold a retractable fire hose.

Overall the Lego fire station is a good value set that will encourage role playing and creative skills, with so many pieces there’s plenty of scope for children to build numerous different models.
